UPDATE: Senate Lawmakers Pass $161 Billion Stimulus Bill

He said that the bill would put more cash into the U.S. economy right away.

The bill has a cap to prevent wealthy people from receiving rebates. The House bill includes a similar cap. "It's very, very targeted to people who will spend the money," Baucus added.

Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, the committee's top Republican, concurred that the package "would provide a much-needed boost to our economy."

Baucus said that the Senate bill improves upon the House bill by making the rebate proposal simpler -- giving 21 million senior citizens the same rebates as other wage earners and extending unemployment insurance to jobless workers.

White House cites weak growth

Citing weak fourth-quarter growth results, the White House is urging lawmakers to finish work on the bill as soon as possible.

Death Of New York Officer A Mystery

They told him to drop the gun three times,'' Cathy Schipper told the Daily News of New York City. ``He never said, 'I'm a cop' or 'I've got a badge.'''

If Ridley heard them - at least one witness said he may not have - he did not react. The officers fired an estimated 9 or 10 shots, hitting Ridley about four times. He died immediately.

Before Friday, none of the county officers had ever fired a gun in the line of duty. One of the men is black, one is white, and two are Hispanic. The dead officer was black.

Ridley's pastor called the killing ``an outrageous execution of a young African-American,'' and the Rev. Al Sharpton asked whether Ridley would have been shot if he were white. But there was no apparent rancor at a City Council ceremony in which the dead officer's gold shield was presented to his mother.

Software GameStop's 35 Percent Holiday Sales Growth Criticized

Given the staggering quality and quantities of video games released throughout the second half of 2007, it should surprise few that games retailer GameStop reported one of its most successful financial results in its history.

Sales results for the nine-week holiday period ending January 5, 2008 were $2.3 billion, a 34.7 percent increase from the prior year holiday period of $1.7 billion.

"Driven by robust domestic and international sales, GameStop achieved the most successful holiday season results ever," said R. Richard Fontaine, GameStop chairman and CEO. "Video game software sales grew by 45%, while the next generation installed base is now triple last year's base and a very positive leading indicator for future sales growth."

The top five video games sold by GameStop throughout the holiday period were Guitar Hero III, Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, Rock Band and Super Mario Galaxy.
