Letters to the Editor for Jan. 31

When something like September 28th happens we should want to know the whole truth as that is our best hope of prevention, but rarely have we seen the truth sequestered as it has been in the Greg Wright case.

In a matter involving a teen we would expect a civilized society to be looking for reasons to salvage the life of a boy who harmed no one, even though he scared many. It is easy to lose sight of the part of us that is rational and faithful in the face of fear, and how we act when we have had time to reflect defines who we are.

A man was sentenced on the 22nd to 17 years in prison for trying to help terrorists acquire a 'dirty' bomb, which could possibly have killed hundreds of thousands with deadly radiation. A boy was sentenced on the 17th to 22 years in prison for wanting to kill himself and hoping someone .

Rogue trader in court's hands, but fate of Societe Generale shakier ...

He insists there is no "sickness" at the bank and predicted "a remarkable will to rebuild" among employees.

Jean-Pierre Mustier, head of the bank's corporate and investment banking arm, has said the bank will pay staff to retain them amid the crisis.

"I have no doubt that a certain number of competitors, as they do every year, will try to poach people," he said.

Hit by the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis, and now the trading scandal, Societe Generale's shares have lost more than half of their value since last year's high close of €158.42 ($233.75) on May 5.

Although its shares were up €2.77 ($4.09) to €73.02 ($107.74) in midday Paris trading Tuesday, the bank risks dropping to third place behind Credit Agricole among France's biggest banks by market value.

Diehl has been a shifty character

CHANDLER, Ariz. - It is as if his pro football life had been authored by Theodor Seuss Geisel.

Right guard, right tackle. Left guard, left tackle.

Only the script has come not from the children's author but from New York Giants coaches and management. They have constantly kept David Diehl on the move along the offensive line, and he has consistently nodded his head.

"I'm a team guy. It's the way I was brought up," said the fifth-year offensive lineman whose versatility has helped forge a wall of protection in front of quarterback Eli Manning.

During a six-game winning streak that began in Week 3 and turned the team's fortunes around, the Giants' offensive line gave up just six sacks. For the season, New York yielded just 28 to rank 12th in the NFL, and preseason concerns about a line that for the first time since 1998 was without left tackle Luke Petitgout appear as distant in the rearview mirror as a Tucker Fredrickson catch and run.

Lenovo's results beats expectations

Analysts expect U.S. technology spending to weaken as the world's largest economy teeters on the brink of recession, and a consequent price war could hit personal computer makers in 2008. But demand should bounce back in 2009, they say.

"This will be a key year for Lenovo, as 2008 will mark the first year without IBM branding on our products," William Amelio, chief executive of Lenovo, said in a statement. "We believe 2008 will be a breakout year for the Lenovo brand on the world stage."

Lenovo racked up 22 percent growth in shipments globally during October to December as it rode the industry's peak buying season, but intense competition is expected to pressure margins.

Acer, which usurped Lenovo's global No. 3 spot in the same period, managed 60.3 percent growth.
